NTAR Apprentice Wellbeing Newsletter - Samaritans - Who are they?

The Samaritans are a UK based charity that offer free and confidential emotional support for anyone struggling with mental health and suicide. Their mission is to decrease the amount of people who die by suicide. They offer 24/7 support with trained professionals for a non-judgemental service.


Rail Industry Suicide Prevention Programme

Samaritans work with Network Rail and other companies to reduce suicide on the railways. Some of its achievements are listed below:

  • Training - Trained over 32,000 rail staff in Samaritans’ suicide prevention and trauma awareness courses

  • Campaigning - Delivered the multi-award winning campaign ‘Small Talk Saves Lives’

  • Engagement - Increased engagement from train operating companies across England, Scotland, and Wales year-on-year

  • Helpline - Call 116 123 to speak to a volunteer who will listen and will focus on your thoughts and feelings

  • Face-to-face - Using the link https://www.samaritans.org/branches/you can find a branch near you for safe, in-person environment to discuss, not only about yourself, but if you are worried about others too
