Overview
“Providing specialist technical support for engineers.” - Skills England
Year 1: Starting the Journey
Year 1 marks the beginning of the apprentice’s journey toward becoming a competent Engineering Manufacturing Technician. This foundational year is designed to build confidence, embed professional behaviours, and introduce core engineering principles across design, mathematics, mechanical and electrical systems, and project management. Apprentices will engage in both college-based learning and workplace development, gradually transitioning from observation to active participation. The emphasis is on developing safe working practices, technical awareness, and an understanding of career pathways within the engineering and manufacturing sectors.
Work-Based Development:
Year 1 focuses on workplace integration and confidence-building. Apprentices begin by observing experienced colleagues and gradually engage in technical tasks.
Year 2: Building Technical Ownership
Year 2 represents a shift from foundational learning to active technical contribution. Apprentices begin to apply their knowledge in real-world contexts, taking on greater responsibility in both college and workplace settings. This year deepens understanding of integrated engineering systems, maintenance strategies, an continuous improvement practices. Through guided practice and project involvement, apprentices develop confidence in using data to inform decisions and begin to take ownership of tasks. Career exploration continues, with a focus on roles such as technician, systems engineer, and project coordinator.
Work-Based Development:
Year 2 focuses on active contribution. Apprentices begin applying technical knowledge, supporting maintenance tasks, and understanding how systems interact. They move from observation to guided practice, with increasing responsibility.
Year 3: Focus on Technical Mastery & EPA Preparation
Year 3 is the final stage of the apprenticeship journey, where learners transition into emerging professionals. The focus is on demonstrating technical mastery, leading tasks, and preparing for End Point Assessment (EPA). Apprentices compile evidence of competence, reflect on their development, and engage in professional discussions. With a strong emphasis on independence, communication, and career planning, Year 3 equips apprentices to progress into higher education, specialist roles, or leadership pathways.
